AI coding tools continue to evolve, and xAI's new grok-code-fast-1 model is worth trying. This article shares first impressions of using it with Cline in VSCode, highlighting the smooth workflow and productivity benefits.

AI coding tools keep evolving, and some are worth pausing to try out.

xAI just launched grok-code-fast-1, optimized for coding, and it's free to use in this launch week. Paired with Cline in VSCode, it feels less like prompting a chat window and more like vibing with a coding buddy.

My quick take after using it:

⬆️ Switches smoothly between "plan" and "act" modes ⬆️ Helped me upgrade a legacy repo to the latest dependencies ⬆️ Cline's rules + memory bank made context handling surprisingly convenient ⚠️ Occasionally got stuck in a loop while fixing errors (still manageable)

Overall - it saved me time, reduced friction, and made the flow a lot smoother. Definitely worth experimenting while access is open.
